Historical Background

of

Savanna- la- mar High & Preparatory

The Savanna-la-mar High and Preparatory School is located on 3 ½ acres of land along the Gooden’s River road, Savanna-la-mar Westmorland Jamaica.  Savanna-la-mar High and Preparatory School is a Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) institution owned and operated by the West Jamaica Conference of Seventh Day Adventist (SDA), and is recognised by the Ministry of Education.

The founder for the Savanna la mar High and Preparatory school is Dr. Lunnette Wright (wife of Pastor E.R.E. Wright Sr). Dr Wright noticed that there was a large number of young girls in the church who were not attending school and decided to create an opportunity for these girls to acquire an education. The first location for the school was the Savanna la mar Seventh Day Adventist Church which is located on Lewis Street in Savanna la mar. The focus was to provide Christ centered education for the students.

In 1967 the institution opened its doors to forty four (44) students fulfilling the original mandate of providing Christ centered quality education.  Over four (4) decades later, the preparatory school provides an education for students at kindergarten one (1) to Grade six (6) at the primary level while the high school educates students from first Form/Grade seven (7) to fifth form/grade eleven (11). The students are prepared for subjects in the sciences, Arts, Business and Technical Vocational areas. They are able to sit these subjects at the CSEC level.
